I was in grade 5, Harry Potter had only been out for a year in North America and nobody had heard of it yet.

My teacher read it to the class. She was so…

 I was about 12, I think. My mom was reading it out loud to my little sister, and I just kept hanging around to listen. She would do different voices for the characters, especially Hagrid, and she pronounced Hermione’s name “Her-moin-ee”.

It’s very telling that our copy of Sorcerer’s Stone is a paperback, but all the rest are hardback. After the first one, we bought them all as SOON as they came out!
